Our calfskin story begins in the Middle East where arrangements were made for the humane and tender caring of cattle so as to prevent the kinds of abrasions, nicks, and tears common to industrially produced leathers. Spending time with the ranchers and farmers to improve their dietary control and life conditions of their stock, Frederic was able to secure a steady, though small, supply of these superior skins.

Our story moves on across the Mediterranean to Italy where after extensive searches and prolonged negotiations Mr. Craig was able to inspire one of Italy’s oldest family owned and operated traditional tanneries to finish our skins with skills they have developed over centuries. Every step of the tanning, preparation, and dying treatment is done by hand.  Traditional tanner’s arts are preserved in our exclusive access to these extraordinary skins.

As our fine skins are finished and prepared to cross the Atlantic they are carefully rolled into small bundles which are then individually wrapped for safe transport. At our New York City production facility, our cutters carefully inspect and select specific skins for particular bags to ensure the highest quality. Each bag is individually cut from a single skin so that there is a consistency to the grain and feel. As the bag is carefully assembled it is to preserve this granular flow that the parts are matched and sewn together.
